Importance of statistics in education

Statistical and mathematical methods are very important in the study of human population and other natural phenomena. Mathematics is one branch out of statistics which involves studying of data to determine patterns and how they develop over time.

There are many fields of mathematics apart from statistics. One such field is Geometry. The work done by geometrically inclined engineers and architects is critical for their field. It involves analyzing a site to plan a building with the help of their knowledge of geometry.

Geometry can be used as a method for designing structures and also in construction planning. These are two crucial processes in any design, which allows to find the shortest and most cost effective route to reach some predetermined destination.

Statistics and analysis of numbers is the most fundamental component which is indispensable in education sector. There exists great variety of subjects from science to humanities being taught at various institutions of higher learning in the world. However, it has become imperative to include more quantitative techniques into their curriculum in order to make them relevant and useful for students. This aspect has opened up several avenues of application like marketing analytics or even environmental forecasting and research.

The importance of using statistics is immense. You can measure things very easily over large areas because, we have the ability to analyze and observe all kinds of events. We can easily assess our food, water, land and climate. So, the use of statistics will provide us with better quality food while saving a great deal on money by minimizing wastage.

Statistics is not only crucial for business management but also for students who have got more interest in making positive impacts on the society. All these skills play an immense role in developing soft skills like interpersonal communication and decision making. Most importantly for every individual or institution, there is always a need to learn to think properly and be able to give solutions to problems at hand. Hence, statistics forms an integral part of good English speaking teachers who can teach us well about social issues and how to solve them.

Importance of statistics in education

For any kind of educational system, statistics plays a vital role. It serves as a tool that can be used to ascertain student’s performance and understand which strategies are working best for them. From class attendance to GPA, what motivates students? What makes them feel contented, satisfied and fulfilled? How can they improve?

Statistics is the bedrock of such studies. There is no doubt that its usage helps you identify students who may have a problem at school and also to identify those who don’t. Thus, these aspects, which have been touched upon by statistical methods, serve as guidelines for guiding schools towards improvements. They also help in improving efficiency of service delivery in the school through greater understanding of students’ behavior.

In addition, it allows institutions to focus on what matters, on their strengths and weaknesses and hence on helping them grow. Also statistical tools ensure that the right kind of services are offered on demand of students and this is especially essential for students with special needs. By implementing statistical techniques, students can see where different aspects have contributed in improving the academic results or whether there is any issue that needs further investigation. This would allow them to know where they stand and also where they have improved.

According to Prof. Aravind Kishore, ‘Statistics provides answers to questions like who is doing well? What are the key drivers? Why are they getting good grades? Which is not enough? Where are issues coming from in these students? And so on’ The main objective behind using statistical tools in education is to make sure that the right kind of approaches are implemented and hence ensuring optimum use of resources. Apart from giving details of students’ performances and their individual performances, it gives the necessary directions on which courses should be taken by the year 2018.

Apart from providing the information regarding the performance of a particular student or group of students, statistic can also give insights into how much time the teacher spends on the same class by using a given number of parameters. For instance, if we are told that a class starts with 75 students then, based on the above mentioned facts, we can determine that the class may require another 5 minutes of teaching. If another class has 20 students, then by knowing the numbers, one can tell the teachers about the students’ performance. Asking the question ‘what percentage of students had better marks than others’, this method can be very helpful for determining students who would require extra attention and also the ones who could benefit from extra classes, who would also come with extra lessons and who can be better taught by experts.

Importance of Agriculture/Agricultural Statistics

Another field where statistics plays an important role is agriculture. With increased industrialization and urbanization, there has emerged new challenges, which can destroy the basic principles of agricultural systems and farming practices. The basic principle of soil erosion, water shortages and pollution continues to persist and this may lead to serious consequences for the crops. For example, farmers can destroy the fertility of the soil by spraying chemicals on it. Moreover, these pesticides can harm animals on the farms in certain parts of the country.

It is clear that the modern technologies used have been damaging the natural environment and are not sustainable. To overcome these challenges, farmers need to focus on a holistic approach. Not only this, but also to save the local forests, remove all harmful substances like pesticides and fertilizers, create alternative sources of energy and reduce damage to air, water and land. Many countries now encourage people to try organic farming and other new technologies. But since they do not want to go back to the old ways, they continue to use conventional ways.
